Today we got up early and went to the Agra Fort. It is huge. Seeing these places really brings to life stories I have read. Seeing the gates, walls, and moats makes me think of the castles and their residents from all the fairy tales. We have laughed so much at funny things that are said. After each attraction, the guide takes us to a local artisan. Most have been very expensive, but I am sure the quality is much higher than just your normal tourist attraction. They seem to get upset if you do not buy. Even the guide seems a little upset. I am sure he gets some sort of kick back, but I can not afford to buy something at every artisan’s shop. Maybe we made a mistake the first day buying something. However, it was something that really appealed to me. I think we got a really good price on it as well. We bought a ring for me. It is a ruby in Victorian setting – more of a traditional Indian piece. I was smitten. It was a very good price, too.
After the fort, we went back to our hotel, had breakfast, skyped with Joy Anna, and then checked out of the hotel. Our next stop was another tomb. I will get the names of everything on the photo albums when I have time. Please don’t give up on following us.
Each time we see one of these opulent palaces or tombs, I am overwhelmed by the poverty surrounding it. In the very shadow of such majesty there are people sleeping in tents made from tarps or just on the ground. There are beggars on every corner. Children turning flips in the street, dusting off cars, or just straight out begging. It breaks my heart.
